What you can do:

• Link up pretty much every home automation service together in one app.
• Group lights or devices together with a single switch on the app, even if they're made by different manufacturers!
• Create rules like "if my living room is > 24 C, turn on the air conditioning"

Bonus tips:

• Using a Broadlink device, you can affordably blast IR commands at devices that support it.
